Help! Want to make carts legal on city streets.
Ok, here's what I want to do.
I am going to go to several city council meetings in cities in my area. My goal is to have the cities pass ordinances allowing golf cars to be operated on city streets where the speed limit is under 35 mph. The State of Kentucky has a statute in place that gives guidelines to cities. But individual cities need to pass their own ordinance. The state has given the typical requirements 16 years old with operator license Headlights, tail lights, brake lights, horn, seat belts, windshield wiper. Plus must have insurance. State of Kentucky does NOT require registration or plates, but each cart must be inspected by local sheriffs office for compliance and require a sticker issued by the city. Here's what I need....has anyone lobbied a city for such a thing? I am going to make a presentation that highlights the fuel savings and "community" aspect of golf cars bringing neighbors together. What else can or should I bring up? There are currently 6 cities in Kentucky (that I know of) that have ordinances allowing Golf Cars. I have copies of those ordinances. Let me know what you think and what I can present in order to increase my chances of being successful. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

You could drop a petition off at all the cart shops in your town. At least you would get an idea of how much support you would be getting.

Push the green energy + clean air aspect of replacing auto miles with electric cart miles. It will reduce the city's carbon footprint and leave cleaner air for the CHILDREN>GL

Here is the ordinance they just passed last week for us. I like scottyb's advice also about the "green" aspect...heck, I would throw in the noise reduction, and getting to know your neighbors better by being more inclined to stop and talk which could lead to watching out more for each other and reducing crime stats! May sound crazy but towns will do pretty much anything to get their crime rate stats down!

Re: Help! Want to make carts legal on city streets.
^^Looks like Pleasant Garden reluctantly passed this ordinance....
First paragraph: Golf Carts, are not designed or manufactured to be used on public streets, roads and highways, hereinafter “road(s),” and the Town in no way advocates or endorses their operation on roads. The Town, by regulating such operation, is trying to address obvious safety issues, and adoption of this Ordinance is not to be relied upon as a determination that operation on roads is safe or advisable if done in accordance with this Ordinance. |

They are always going to look at the safety of golf carts on the road with cars.
They could care less if they polute less, or ease of transportation. Look into Sun city Arizona, lots of carts on the road with cars. I'm in the villages, but there are a lot of golf car verse car accidents here. Most get sweep under the rug. |

So a golf cart on streets with cars is not as safe as a motorcycle being driven by someone without a helmet? Or worse yet a Moped? Stop. SOme coward wrote that to release the town of liability. |
