Default Newbie question about batteries

I have a 48volt 1999 club car. A cart shop told me that I could test the batteries by putting the cart in forward and pressing the brake and gas at the same time to put it under a load while checking the voltage drop on the batteries. I have done that and I'm wondering if what I have is right. Four batteries tested @17.2 volts not under load and 16.4 with load. Two batteries tested 13.0 not under load and 12.6 under load. Are the two low ones going bad? They are different than the other four. Should all read around 17 without a load or 13? Thanks ahead of time!

By the way the two low ones are Deka and the rest are Trojan. Not sure if this helps or makes a difference. I'm not sure how to check the year of the Deka's...

I would say the 2 low ones are at least going bad, maybe not bad yet but on there way. If they are that far off from the rest of the pack you could cause the others to go bad. One bad battery will cause lots of trouble. Ideally,They should all be within a few points for the best lifetime possible.

DISCLAIMER:

I'm not a Club Car guru or for that matter an expert of any kind but:

Here's what I would do:

Check each cell of each battery with a good hydrometer and record the specific gravity readings for each battery.

Check each individual battery voltage at rest and record.

Charge pack completely and recheck individual battery voltages and record.
If you can, monitor and check voltages at beginning of charge cycle and once again at end of charge cycle and record.

Usually, the bad ones rear their heads via the SG check or voltage check.

I'm assuming 6 batteries @ 8v each since from your voltages in the above post you are measuring across pairs. Right?

FWIW
HIH.

entire pack should read about 50 volts, individual batteries should read about 8.5-9 volts...... under load about 48, or 7.9

I sure hope so...if not something ain't right. Putting the motor under load like that can't be good for it either. I'd recommend jacking up the rear end, put it on jack stands, and hit the gas.
