Default 91 club car ds - new clutches - belt slips on hill

I have a 91 club car ds gas, new clutches, new carb, oil change, spark plug and belts. Compression test was 90+. I have good top end speed but no torque starting up even the slightest hill. I ordered a power spring and a double sided power belt that will be here end of the week but can't think of anything else it could be.

Any chance a previous owner put some high speed gearing in the rear end?

Check the center to center distance from the Crankshaft bolt to the transaxle input shaft bolt. (center of each clutch)
It should be 9-5/8". If its too close together you will get belt slippage.
Also it makes a difference to use a quality belt on these. The cheapo $15 belts on the jungle store or from the chinesium suppliers will burn up in a heartbeat.

I don’t think the previous owner did anything to the gearing. It goes about 11mph with the governor set to factory position. I checked the nut-to-nut distance, it’s closer to 9 7/8 or even 10 inches. The Belt is $50 from oreillys. 1 1/16th by 37.5. The other belt I tried is 1inch by 38.5.

It should be 1" x about 37.5". The original OEM number is a 1016203 for a standard belt.
A Dayco HP2007 is similar to the Club Car 1017188 heavy duty belt used on these.

1-1/16 belt is too wide and probably not sitting down enough between the sheaves on the primary clutch which will take away power. The motor needs to rev up to climb hills and the further out the belt sits in the primary the less torque you have.

Also try adjusting the governor a bit, or put a zip tie on the governor spring to help get a little more throttle when going up hills. Just keep it out of the rev limiter on the downhill runs.

Ive got a new heavy duty belt coming that replaces the 1017188. its 1.05 width. I never thought about a wider belt slipping in the primary. I had no problems going up hills until i put the new clutches on. Hopefully the new power spring and belt fix the problem when they arrive tomorrow. As far as the governor spring, I have it set to factory, when you talk about the zip tie mod will that work on the kf-82? Ive tried going up hills with the governor linkage loose and it didnt give me any more low-end power.

I think the vevor primary clutch i put on is the issue. I switched out the starter/generator belt pully and thought it would work based on a youtube video but it slips. going to put the old primary clutch on and see what happens.

Oh yeah, sorry you got one of those. If it says Vevor it's not worth the package it came in.
Those are absolute trash. Send it back if you can. There are a few brands that seem OK, but the jungle store ones are kind of a crap-shoot these days.

What kind of secondary did you get?

I’ve bought at least 3 of this clutch and not had any problems out of them.

They were $116 last time I bought it but still worked well and no issues. The last one was on a 93 with opposite rotation engine like yours and it worked just fine on that one too. You may have to swap your starter gen pulley over to it if it’s a different size though, but that’s just 3 bolts no big deal.

The front bolts of the engine mount were slid over towards the passenger side. I slid it back square and put it new bolts, the rubbing ate through about half the bolt. I then put in the power spring and am now able to pull a steep hill with 2 passengers. I dont know if its worth changing out the vevor clutch for a better one now that it finally works?
