Default Build your own 12v -->8v Conversion?

I have a 2006 DS with the 4x12v battery setup. They are getting a bit long in the tooth and I'm considering swapping to the 6x8v setup.

I've seen the youtube video of someone doing this on the exact same cart and they bought a kit...that kit seems pretty pricey for some alu angle, a couple extra battery cables and tie-downs.

I likley would need different cables anyway since I'm running Alltrax XCT500 and a plum quick motor (I'm guessing they are only including standard cables in the kit).

So my question is - can't I just grab some aluminum stock from the local hardware store and build the tray's myself? No I don't have the ability to weld aluminum but I'm figuring some pop rivets and jb weld would hold the spreader bars ok - the rest is bolted in.

Buy the tiedowns and extra cables separate....

Anyone done this? Or should I just buy the kit for $250ish

I would price out all materials for the diy and if you come up close to the kit just buy the kit. If your saving alot then diy.

Why not just follow the sticky?

I didnt switch from 4-12 to 6-8 batteries but I did add a 7th battery (12 volt) and did exactly what your talking about . Alum angle and pop rivets to make a frame and did a quick sand on the rivets heads to smooth out where it cut off. In make room for the extra battery I also moved the center 2 forward .

Self tappers sit to high and you dont want them rubbing on the batteries

My cart has 6x8v setup from factory. When I got the cart the aluminum angle that holds the batteries was corroded in multiple places. I searched a lot on here and had multiple people say rivets are sufficient to attach the angle to the frame so I would assume it would be fine to add new ones to hold the batteries like you need a pop rivet them in. I have a buddy who does aluminum welding so I cut the old ones out and had him weld new ones in for me.

There is also a sticky for a DS conversion:
