18 HP Briggs Opposed twin fuel problem
I have a briggs 18 hp opposed twin in my G9 and I'm using the original G9 fuel pump. It will run fine for a while then all of a sudden it acts like it's running out of gas. I have to run it with choke out and it still dies. If I stop and let it idle for a bit, then go, it will run fine for a little bit until it starts acting up all over again. Is it possible that the G9 fuel pump can't supply enough fuel or is it going bad? I have rebuilt the carb, installed all new fuel lines and filter and nothing seems to help. Do you think that I should go to a low pressure electric fuel pump? It's pretty annoying when your trying to get back from the lake and it acts up. All help is greatly appreciated.

I'd try the hi-volume pulse first. Cheaper and easier, no need to run electrical and fuel return to the tank. Here's a link to CPP's:

Re: 18 HP Briggs Opposed twin fuel problem
Pull the pulse line and see if it has oil in it, if you are using the crankcase. Just put a clone in and it fills it with oil, it could be because the pump is below the case outlet and the oil can't run back down...the yami outlet is below the pump. Also could be because we have no baffle on the engine are making one right now to catch the oil. If that don't work will use the intake instead. When I pull the gas line and its clear of oil the gas shoots out a foot, I had to stretch the spring in the float because it had too much pressure.

I have a 5.5 - 9psi electric fuel pump that my neighbor used on a cushman truckster with the same engine in it. I'll let you know if that solves the problem. Thanks!!

Re: 18 HP Briggs Opposed twin fuel problem
Okay guys!!
Sorry for not replying sooner. I've been very busy with work. Anyways, the electric fuel pump solved the problem. After driving for a while and then stopping, the fuel must evaporate from the carb. Turn the key on and wait a few seconds, it starts right up and runs fine. The fuel pump is a 3-4.5 psi pump made by Facet. Thanks. |

Hi I'm going to use the same engine in mine. Do you have some pics you would be willing to post? How did you get a clutch to work on it? You are the first I have sean with the opposed twin engine so fare. thanks

Re: 18 HP Briggs Opposed twin fuel problem
I took an old G9 Yamaha crankshaft, cut it off and had it drilled out to fit the 1" shaft. You can get the adapter from CPP. I then used a snowmobile clutch comet 94C with a very light spring from Ace Hardware. It still doesn't work like I want it to, but it is driveable. The stock clutch will not work unless you make room on the gas tank side for clearance (It is wider because of the starter/generator pulley). I built my own engine mount using angle iron and strap steel. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the mount by itself. The belt is an EZGO 78-87 that is 1-3/16" x 45". I used a 1-1/4" exhaust pipe from a Mustang and welded it to the exhaust ports. I got lucky as my neighbor had a muffler from an old generator and it runs pretty quiet. I am saving for the CPP clutch. You will have to wrap your exhaust with insulation to keep the Temp. down under the seat. It does run well after I put the electric fuel pump on it. At 3600 RPM with 22" x 11" x 10" tires, I get around 25 MPH. That's fast enough for me. I'll post some pictures. Anymore questions, feel free to ask, I'll try to help you in doing this as I don't think it was very easy, but you may better at this than me.

Re: 18 HP Briggs Opposed twin fuel problem
Opposed, do you use a longer belt? I didn't figure one would fit to the trans, but I bet it runs really smooth. I have an onan 20 I'd like to replace with something larger and put that in a cart, but it has splines on the crank.

Re: 18 HP Briggs Opposed twin fuel problem
Yes, the stock belt is only I think about 40 inches long. You need the longer belt because the back cylinder wants to hit the shifter levers on the rear end with the stock belt. You will also need to lower the front of the engine carriage approximately 2 inches to get the motor to sit more level. I assume that you have a lifted cart. They have to be lifted to get the height for the engine to fit. I'm not familiar with the engine with the splined shaft. Post some pictures of it if you can.
