Default Can any key switch be used?

I have an EXGO '05 series cart. I have searched all the forums but can't find the answer I'm looking for. I want to put a new key switch which has 4 terminals so I can turn on both the carts and lights from the same switch. I also want to have an unique key so others won't be able to drive my cart. I can find both these switches for about $20-$30 each, but when I find an "universal" switch the price goes to $80-$90 !!!! My question is can I put another brand of 4 terminal switch in the cart (Club car, Yamaha, etc) so people that have the extra EZGO keys can't use it. I realize that these other brands probably have the same common key too within their brand but I am at a large fair each year where we rent several EZGO's and everyone has the same key and carts are constantly being "borrowed". What brand would be the best fit?

Welcome to BGW ......
Simplify your thinking. Any auto parts house will have a generic ignition switch which will fit the bill for $15 - 20.
You can connect more than one wire to a terminal if needed. Been there, done this

OK, i'm looking at a generic starter switch with 4 terminals marked: Battery, Ignition, Accessory, and Starter. It has 4 positions: Accessory, Off, On, and Start. I asume that I wouldn't use the start position at all since it is spring loaded. I have my accessories on a seperate 12v battery.
Can some explain to me how to wire this switch to turn off both systems?
Thanks,

I'm no expert, but with the switch you have it can't be done. You would have to have the 36volts connected to a relay. So when you turn on the key 12 volts energize the relay. Then 12v to your lights. BUT your cart and lights would be on at the same time. You would need a single poll double throw switch to run 12v and 36v at the same time.

Boy, this is clear as mud!

The other option for your "fair people" to be kept from driving your vehicle is to leave the switch you have, but add an immobilizer so that it will only turn on with your key FOB. It might be a little pricier than what you originally thought, but then nobody will have your FOB no matter how many keys are in their pockets. (Unless of course you leave the key and FOB in the cart.)

Thanks for all the help and advice! You guys are great, especially for us that are just into carts and still have a lot to learn.

I found a uniquely keyed switch that also works for lights on the EZ GO site.
It was only $52 - not cheap but better than what they were wanting for the aftermarket ones ($80-$90). I think I will go that route.......................

Here is a link to barrel keys, 1 2 position and the other 3 position, for starting, both $22 each.

I purchased both and they work very well, 2 for my cart and the 3 position for a bike.

3 pos swt.

1 = off
2 = power on
3 = power on , lights on

run wire from swt to solenoid in pos 1

run wire from swt to solenoid and lights on pos 2.

insert diode in wire from swt to solenoid in pos two to block voltage from backfeeding while in pos 1.

The factory switch is your best option. They aren't $52.00 though...

These will work in a club car as direct replacement? And, is the key unique for each switch? I've been looking for a unique key option too.
