g1 rear axle shaft
Hey guys, so the boy is driving the cart (1981 g1) around our trail and the rear tire breaks off. Yep snapped the axle right off. How hard is this to replace and how hard are they to find? any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: g1 rear axle shaft
Not hard at all. Brake drum off. Axle flange has 2 holes in it. Rotate the holes to 1 and 7 o'clock. Remove the 2 12mm head bolts. Rotate till the holes are at 5 and 11 o'clock and remove the bolts. Tap on the axle flange to get the axle and bearing out of the axle housing. If the axle broke at the splines internal of the transaxle, try a long scoping magnet to get the broken peice out. If not, you'll need to remove the axle housing, drill an 1/8 or 3/16 hole into the broken axle peice and use a screw into the drilled hole, then pull it out. If the axle was broken at the bearing, you can use the drill and screw method also. Good luck

Re: g1 rear axle shaft
finally got some pics of the cart on here. We wanted to do a build thread and have lots of pics from start to finish. Hopefully when winter comes. cart goes good I must say, plenty of power climbing the hills here in NC. brakes seem to be the major issue now. They just dont work coming down the hills. Everyone here has been a big help , thanks for that.

Re: g1 rear axle shaft
You may want too pull the brakes off and clean up all the parts and then lube the contact areas with a little dab of grease. Also check the cables and brake pedal parts. You may also have to do some adjustment.
With these carts only having rear brakes I want everything I can get from them. I pulled the axles out of the tubes and they are the same length. When I pulled the brake backing plates off I found that the brakes and parts on this rear had been replaced not too long before I got it. All the springs and other parts are like new and shiny and the brake pads have lots of meat on them. Good to have extra brake parts. I'll get an axle packed up today for you. |
