Axle/rearend strong enough!?!
First off, hello. I've been hanging around here for awhile now and I'm finally getting my project underway.
I have a '92 EzGo Marathon that I'm going to be dropping a 2003 Suzuki GSX-R 600 engine into. I'll be custom fabricating a lift, new subframe, roll bar, etc. My question is do you think the stock rearend could hold up to that kind of horsepower (115), if it were adapted to a sprocket drive? My origonal plan was to use a "quad" style axle set-up, possibly IRS. But I thought it would be cool to keep reverse. Any input or suggestions are welcome. I've got most everything ready to go, I just want to have a complete plan before I begin. And I will start a detailed build-up thread with pics as soon as I really get moving. Thanks in advance, Mike |

Re: Axle/rearend strong enough!?!
I have never seen an EZ-GO rear end explode but if it was gonna happen it will with 115 HP pushed through it. I think what tears rear differentials up is abuse....such as burnouts and sudden shock. I do know of people pushing around 60-70 HP without issue.

Re: Axle/rearend strong enough!?!
Well do you think the kind of person that would put a crotch rocket engine in a golf cart would not abuse it?
I could use use the stock axle and if it breaks, then change over to a quad rear. My real dilema is that the subframe/rear suspension will have to be designed around the axle setup. So if I design it for the stcker and it gets smoked, I'll just about have to completely redesign the back half. I'm just kind of thinking about this outloud right now. If I were confident that it would hold, I would rather use the stock axle. That's why I'm looking for opinions and expiriences. Thanks for your input keep 'em coming. Mike |

Re: Axle/rearend strong enough!?!
I doubt it would last very long doing it like your wanting to. the rear has a 13 to 1 ratio and you'll be spinning it way beyond its designed limits. If you were to re-gear it to 8 to 1, or 6 to 1, so to not spin it as fast, it would stand a better chance of surviving.

Re: Axle/rearend strong enough!?!
I HAVE DONE THIS WITH A YAMAHA G16 golf car twith a GSXR 750 motor. tried to use the stock rearend. we machined a sprocket to fit the rear end to . just to let you know it went 8 mph in 6 gear go with the atv rearend dont wast your time with the stock one

Re: Axle/rearend strong enough!?!
Wouldn't that all depend on what size sprocket you used to spin the rear end? What am I missing here? If you have your gearing figured correctly it shouldn't matter what is spinning the input shaft to the rearend.
My only reason for even considering the stock rear is to keep reverse. I have decided that I'm gonna fab up an independent rear suspension. Weather that be with the stock center section or a sprocket center I'm still trying to decide. Thanks for all your thoughts, they're exaclty the kind of answers I'm looking for. |
