Re: First smallmouth of the year!
I've heard they're good to eat, but some people say that about anything. Never tried it myself.
They are the top predator in several rivers in this area. Population control of other species would be probably their biggest benefit. They're a ton of fun to catch... if you can get one to bite a lure and stay on. There are some really serious Musky anglers out there that will fish for weeks without a bite and still go back for more. |

First smallmouth of the year!
Nice fish! I really wish we had Smallmouth around here. I’ve always heard they put up a much better fight than their largemouth cousins.

Do you have any Spotted Bass in your area? They're a pretty close match with smallmouth in the fight department. |

Yeah they’re probably in the lake and in the river. I tend to just stick to fishing in ponds. Never had much luck in a big body of water. I’m sure if I put the time and effort into it then it may be different. Deer hunting is my true passion though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: First smallmouth of the year!
Large lakes are not my forte either. I feel much more at home on smaller lakes and ponds, and have had a ton of fun the last year or so wading/canoeing small rivers and streams for smallmouth and trout.

Yup! Nothing like a pan-fry sized brookie from a small creek.

Re: First smallmouth of the year!
My son and I caught these large mouth bass in our pond upstate. Don't mind the latex gloves, I was filling the mice bait stations when my son was screaming " I got one" lol!!
