Marathon EZGO starter
Couple questions:
#1 Runs notably better in reverse. Why? Sign of bad forward side crank seal or timing or worn rings? Thinking worn rings it an 86. idk #2 Bigger problem. Press gas with spark plug out it turns over good. Put finger on spark plug hole and it doesn't crank engine. Starter spins and so does the clutch when sparkplug hole covered just no piston motion. Im pretty sure its not electrical issue as it spins freely and fast. I've charged battery and such too. |

Re: Marathon EZGO starter
Let me see if I'm reading this right.
Problem #2. You take the plug out, and everything turns fine. You can feel air coming out of the plug hole, so you know the piston is moving. You then cover the plug hole to build up some resistance, and the piston quits moving, but the starter and clutch continue to spin. If that is correct, I would say the clutch is loose on the crankshaft. It's a tapered shaft with a pressed fit. Tighten the long retaining bolt. If I'm right about problem #2, you shouldn't even know about problem #1, because it won't run at all. Let's talk about problem #1. Running better in reverse is a sign of worn crankshaft seals. Low compression is a sign of worn rings. Crankshaft seals will have no affect on compression. Post #22 has the 85 manual for you to use. If your cart has the 2nd microswitch located on the lower right corner of the FnR switch, use the 88 manual for wiring. https://buggiesgonewild.com/showthre...=105501&page=3 |

Question #1
I BELIEVE YOUR CORRECT ON CRANK SEALS. NOW THE BIG QUESTION IS...I DONT WANT TO PROPERLY BREAK DOWN ENGINE TO REPLACE BOTH SEALS SO NO NEED FOR COMMENTS ON THAT BUT WHAT SIDE IS MOST PRONE TO WEAR FOR FORWARD OPERATION PTO SIDE OR MAG? IM HOPING PTO 🤞 |

You could spray starter fluid around each seal to see if it makes a difference. The rear is easy. The front one is hit, or miss. Pulling the front flywheel is just as easy as pulling the clutch. The engine needs to be removed with both of them. |

Re: Marathon EZGO starter
I did the spray test the other day...came up empty. I just did some carb adjusting and ultrasonic cleaning...runs normal now! Thanks a bunch! Still would like to know tho which side is most prone to wear with crank seals. Pulling engine is easy but I think pto side could be done without removing whole engine and just taking clutch off...🤷*♂️. Anyhow I don't think its necessary to do the crank seals anymore as it runs good now. New question tho...when doing oil pump delete...pre-mixing gas in tank 100:1 with NGK bp5hs plug? I think 128:1 is too lean was considering 100:1 or 80:1...she's old I don't want her to implode! I plugged inlet oil line to carb with bolt already just fyi.

Re: Marathon EZGO starter
I think it's usually both. Not just one or the other.
I have been running 128:1 since 2013. I drive it every day and pull a heavy firewood trailer with it. I have heard that people that trail ride for hours on end mix 100:1. |

Re: Marathon EZGO starter
Good to know! Guess ill try running 128:1 then...should smoke a lot less I'd imagine! Whats the standard on carb adjustment. 1.5 - 2 turns out on jet with spring? How many out on other jet?

Re: Marathon EZGO starter
Read up on the fuel section of the manual. There is no carburetor adjustment.
