Marathon…New piston rings and now it won’t start
I recently had a new set of standard rings installed on my ‘93 marathon(295 robin 4 stroke) along with all new gaskets and a timing belt. The cart was running before the ring job but smoked and didn’t have a lot of compression. After the job was done it was test dove a few times but no real distance. It seemed like everything was great, but all of the sudden it quit!! It will turn over but won’t start. I have replaced the cdi box and pickup coil and checked the ignition coil. It is getting fuel and won’t start on starting fluid. All the wires seem to be intact, no blown fuses that I can find. What else can I check?? Help please! Thank you!

Maybe your throttle rod came off .
Check the compression now and tell us what it shows. Make sure throttle is wide open when checking. Why did you replace the ignitor ? Did it stop firing ? If so then maybe the plate where ignitor mounts is not getting a good ground. Really need more info and I suggest to not throw parts at it just yet until you verify its definitely not firing. |

Re: Marathon…New piston rings and now it won’t start
Agreed, check the basics.
1. Compression 2. Fuel delivery 3. Spark 4. Air supply Typically if you have all 4 it should run. Check each one. For fuel delivery, I always pull the fuel hose off the carb and put into a jar and crank the engine over. In a 30 second timeframe it should flow at least a couple ounces of fuel. For spark I use a spark tester. Compression use a gauge. Air supply....well, just make sure the carb is opening and the airway is clear. |
