This is what I'm using, it's for a Kohler engine at 20-30 amps. Most likely large for your sled engine but the idea is sound. The 2 outside tabs are marked AC -- the center is marked battery + ---- then the rectifier body is negative. There are a ton of full wave bridge rectifiers on ebay -- just use one that has enough amps to handle what the stator puts out.

Do you then wire that units out put to the voltage regulator?

A little cooler today with no bugs so I pulled out the old Harley engine. Here is a couple of pics of the empty engine bay.

Sorry - the unit I showed you is a "Regulator/Rectifier" -- all you need is in the box. It's as simple as you can get. Does the 440 have a starter built on the engine.

Yes it does. The main reason I bought this engine was it had the clutch, electric starter, carb, fuel and oil pumps, cdi box,and exhaust manifold. The idea was to minimize installation ills.P.S. I just ordered that kohler unit. Thanks again.Wiring is by FAR my weakest area.

If you can -- when you mount that unit -- put it in the air shroud. The little pins on the inside wick the heat out of the unit. It will get hot depending on the output of you alternator. I mounted mine as you can see so it gets lots of cool air. The green screw is the ground mount but my setup is all negative ground anyhow. The main ground is on the engine and the second ground to the frame.

The rectifier in a 450 honda does not have the voltage regulator built in. That's why its so cheap.
