eMoke Steering Wheel Removal?
I just bought a 2019 eMoke and thought I'd swap out the wheel for a wood one to give it more of a classic look. I was thinking maybe I'd be lucky and just take out the 6 screws on the face of the wheel but naturally it wasn't that easy. Next I loosened the nut which was a bit of a chore to get it loose but the wheel is still solidly on there. I searched this topic and on traditional golf carts, there were some good tips about pushing from behind while hitting the nut. I just wanted to make sure those instructions make sense on the Moke and I'm not going to break something. It almost looks like there is something around the base of the bolt that I removed the nut from and just wanted to make sure it wasn't something I was supposed to remove to free the wheel up.

looks normal to me, spin the nut back on, so it it flush with the top of the thread, pressure behind the wheel with your knees and strike the nut with a copper or dead blow hammer/mallet and it should pop right off. May take lots of pressure and a few strikes.

Re: eMoke Steering Wheel Removal?
Finally got around to taking another shot at this. I put the nut back on and even just barely threaded on it sits below the recess area so I put the socket on it so I have something that sits up a bit higher and was hitting the socket with the hammer while up on the back of the steering wheel with my knees. I also tried putting the socket driver that I was using because I have a very clean shot at that. No luck either way. Is there something I'm missing?

Socket is hitting what your trying to remove. Put the nut on flush with the steering shaft pull the Wheel back with your knees and hit the nut directly with a hammer it will pop loose. If you can’t hit the nut because it’s recessed to deep use a brass punch on the shaft and hit that.

Re: eMoke Steering Wheel Removal?
Appreciate the advice. I went ahead and made the nut flush and hit it with the hammer like in the attached photo while pushing up on the wheel from underneath. Still no luck, maybe I'm just not hitting it hard enough? I also took another picture with the nut off does it look like there is some kind of retaining clip holding it?

It just looks like the steering shaft splines to me, you need to hit it like you mean it!

Re: eMoke Steering Wheel Removal?
You probably need more upward pressure on the steering wheel. Otherwise hitting the shaft will not be effective.
If all else fails, you may need to hire a steering wheel puller. |

Re: eMoke Steering Wheel Removal?
Thanks for the advice - might need to get someone else to hit it while I focus my efforts on pushing up on it.

Re: eMoke Steering Wheel Removal?
It almost looks like the splines don't continue all the way to the top and that the part furthest towards the driver is specifically lacking those splines. I have never seen a steering wheel like that so maybe my old eyes are fooling me. But if it is like my eyes think it is then the wheel is captive and whacking it won't help.
But, again, I've never seen a steering column set up like that in real life so just peering at the photo I could very well have it wrong. |
