Default G1 year identify

Hey everyone

I need some help identifying the year on a yamaha g1. It could be easily done however someone took the vin plate off under the rear bumper and the carts age is unknown.

The only real numbers i can get are the ones that are stamped on the engine case, next to the fan at the back of the engine. I can get those numbers if it can be of help.
Also if there is any other "visual" things that would be of help to anyone on identifying what year it is, i can take a picture.

I also want to know the difference between the 1982 G1 and the other years. I have come to conclude that it has something to do with a different reed cage, and the cylinder block is somewhat different, but need help to confirm this. The reason is that i have a g1 that needs to be rebuild, however it is missing the reed cage, and need to get another one. Getting the reed isnt the problem, because yamaha used that same reed part number on their other vehicles of the time. However there are different part numbers for the 82, and other years of cart. And therefore, i need to know what year this cart is.

Any help would be appreciated, i would really like to find out what year this cart is.

Thanks!

Thanks Ron, Ill get some pictures up right away.

Ok i think i got this all figured out, after looking at the number on the engine, and taking all the oil off of it, it came to resemble the vin number of the cart.

And i have come to conclude that it is a 83, g1. it matches the matrix setup in the ID booklet.
But would like more opinions on this

You guy's are so smart....you don't need my help, unless............someone "transplanted" the engine! Life will be so much better if its 1983 and up. Let's see the "build", "MONSTER"!!!!!!!!!!! Dave

I just wanted to be sure of it.

i never heard of taking the vin number off the engine to identify the year of the cart. It could easily of been just a part number. Yamahas part numbers are all a cluster of numbers and letters. I only was able to read the rest of the number today when i decided to take a picture of it. I had originaly just seen the 000's and 9's. and only discovered the J24 once i cleaned it.

As far as plans for the cart, i will take some pics of it tomorow if you want to see it. trust me its not a pretty sight. As far as i know, the cart needs a new pistion, 2 soliniods, an ignitor, a coil, a complete reed, shocks and springs all around, and a gas tank.

So i dont know if i want to keep it, build it, or just sell it before rebuilding it. it feels like it will be a money pit with the ammount of parts it needs in my case, then reselling it. there is a chance that my neighbour will buy it for his drag cars, and i will help him rebuild it. I know that these g1's are a very solid cart. and he knows it too.

What are the benifits of it being a 83 and newer?

In 82 Yamaha decided to use a lower compression engine for some reason. The oddball engine wasn't all that hot, so they went back to the original engine in 83 and used it until it was discontinued because smoke apperently offends some people.

I also noticed that the number stamped on the engine in my 89 matches the vin number on the bumper exactly as well.
