Unhappy G1 just stopped...what now

I am so discouraged! I just finished rebuilding the top end of my 1982 G1, and it has been running good for a few days. It is all stock. This evening I went for about a mile long ride. I went to a buddies house and dropped something off. Hopped back in the cart, it backed up fine but when I went to go forward all it would do is crank. I have spark at the plug (don't know if it is a good spark but it is jumping a quarter inch gap) and I am getting fuel into the cylinder (my plug is wet). I am stumped for the moment. I just towed it home and parked it. Man, if it ain't broke it ain't mine! Any advice would be appreciated.

The wet plug generally indicates a flooded condition or could just be from cranking with no spark. Does it start in reverse? I would dry out the cylinder and spark plug and try again in both forward and reverse.

I will not start in forward or reverse. I even shot a little Ether in the air filter. I would not normally do that on a 2 stroke, but I wanted to see if it would fire. I did not. That leads me to believe it is an ignition problem somewhere. I even swapped plugs in case the new one had fouled (yes it is gapped correctly). The spark looked a little weak. Maybe my coil has failed??? I bet it is original to the cart (30 years old!). I will have to bird-dog how to test that sucker with a volt meter. Could it be a problem with the generator??

The cart was running fine one minute and then would only crank the next (literally).

This is a little background info:

I have the SM for the cart.
Carb is clean as a pin
Muffler BBQ
Bypass of governer
rebuilt top end (honed the cylinder / new rings and gaskets)
Replaced all seals
Reed valves look great.
New belts
Overall the cart is all stock.

I am stumped at this point.

I think the generator is fine if its turning the engine over and keeping the battery charged. You could be correct about the coil although you are getting some spark. I would check all the wiring connections, make sure they are clean and tight. The ground wire seems to be a weak point on these carts.

Thanks. I think that would be a good place to start. It sure seems like it is part of the ignition system.

All I wanted to do last night is put a 1/4 stick of dynamite up the tailpipe!

Everything looks better in the light of a new day!

I'd check the coil. My cart ran poorly until I found a short where the plug wire met the coil. With the OEM coils, the plug wire was molded into the casing, meaning you couldn't remove it. You can locate a new one from one of our forum sponsors or ebay. It runs about $35.00. Let us know how you make out.

My plug boot spins 360 degrees on the wire. I don't think it is supposed to do that

BigEd,
Where can I find a coil for $35?
Most of the ones I found on ebay were around $50. I might be looking in the wrong place.
Thanks!

EDIT: I found one on a site sponsor for $41 + shipping.

I picked up one for my 79 G1 over the winter for $35.00 on ebay. It's still currently for sale but the price has gone up to $39.99 with free shipping.
