Default Help me understand my Electric cart.....Please?

Ok, ive never owned a cart before, but yesterday i picked up a old 1984 club car from a friend for next to nothing, it runs and moves.....kinda herkey jerky...i think some selinoids may be bad....but regardless, i took the body off to paint it, and i just want to learn more about how these carts function.

Like i said, i dont know anything about these old carts. Im told these are refered to as Resistor carts. Im not sure why?

i have some pictures, if someone could please explain a few things, i would greatly appriceate it.

These coils? what are they for? What do they do? Any general information about them.

This box, its located on the drivers side, next to the battery area, it has alot of wires coming out of it......what does it do? any general informaion about it?

The motor, I suppose im just un farmiliar with these all together. Why does it have 3 prongs? is one ground and the other two for forward and reverse ( or polarity switch?)

Also, is there some sort of speed regulator on these? or a unit that draws off of different amount of batteris depending on ware the go pedal is down? i noticed mine is either slow or fast...no inbetween......do i have a problem with somthing?

Im not looking to do anything super extreme, but i want to make the cart slightly faster.....assuming my batteries are good, what can i do to make this cart just alittle zippier? I will upgrade all my cables to 4g, but what else is there i can do?

Thanks for the help

Those solenoids and coils are what controls your speed. Newer carts do not have these. The coils act like a power resistor to limit current to your motor.

The motor should have 4 terminals on it. The terminals should be marked A1,A2, S1 and S2. There is no positive and negative...there is but it depends on what direction your going as to which is positive and negative. Do not get these mixed up. Also..there is a wiring diagram in Electric club car showing the diagram for those solenoids..etc if you need it.

In a nutshell the little box is a Pre V-Glide speed switch assembly. It controls the solenoids which control speed. Your problem could be in the solenoids, broken coils or the speed switch. Check for broken coils, broken wires, bad, rusted or corroded connections. From the pic the coils look good. The solenoids going bad is not uncommon on those models. I believe they only made them a short while.
