Extreeeeeme DC! Power Wheels...
Hey, this is the "All Things Lithium" section, so...
After going Lith on the golf cart my boy and I decided we'll go lith on his power wheels... Anybody else done this before? I picked up a 60ah, 5S Bosch pack out of a Fiat 500e for pretty cheap. It was delivered with each cell reading 4.04V https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-kWh-Bosch...53.m1438.l2649 I've been running his PW Dune Racer on my 20V Max tool batteries and 4.0 amp hours gives him about 9 or 10 minutes on pavement... So I expect 90 minutes of capacity in the new battery. I know the gears are plastic, so I am leaving the rear wheels as plastic to avoid too much traction. I also purchased a half ohm 50 watt resistor to ease the braking action. Hoping to reduce some stress on those plastic gears. Goals: Increase V to increase speed Add heat sinks/ventilation to motor area Ease braking Change to rubber front wheels for better traction and less noise on hard surfaces Mod to allow tighter turning radius Add lights Add horn Can anyone think of something I've missed or should add? Any tips/tricks before I get into all this? |

Those large format samsung cells look like they have potential at that price. That's a lot of A.H. for the money. You ditch the active cooling ?

Re: Extreeeeeme DC! Power Wheels...
No active cooling in the PW because in stock form the peak amp pull is under 40 amps, that's the fuse rating. Going higher V should reduce the amp pull I think. I know 20.4v on the 4.0amp hour tool battery ran fine and didn't pop the 40 amp fuse.
So I'd guess the actual pull is around 30 amps peak which should not require liquid cooling for a battery this size. I am cutting vent holes in the plastic to allow the motors to cool better, so the battery won't be impacted much by the motor heat. If it becomes an issue I could add a vent fan in the plastic body of the car. I would expect that if the heat were enough to be concern for the battery it'd also be a concern for the plastic body. |

Re: Extreeeeeme DC! Power Wheels...
The last of the parts arrived yesterday for the drivetrain. Hoping that the boy and I can work on it some this weekend. Mother In Law is moving though and we may get stuck at her house.
Funny, I'm more excited about this mod then I was when I modded the golf cart to lith! Next post I'll have pictures of everything stock and all the purchased goods. |

Re: Extreeeeeme DC! Power Wheels...
I did get all the parts, but I've been helping mom-in-law move into my hood so my boy and I haven't worked on the car yet. I'm rather disappointed by this...
But as with soooo many of my projects I plan for 2 hours to do the project, it takes 2 weeks to start and 2 more weeks to finish... |

Me thinks you better start looking for metal gears and rubber tires that can handle that. I give it 3 weeks afore those plastic "tires" wear thin and split.
