New top end kit question
I bought a top end kit from buggies and I was told recently that people are having problems with the piston heating up and the pin in the top ring groove coming out and doing damage. I was told to pull that pin out and just let that top ring spin so the piston doesnt get damaged and the other 2 rings will still stop blow by. Anyone heard of this?

Re: New top end kit question
I have never heard of this. By the life of me I don't know why replacement pistons would heat up any more than the pistons they are replacing.
Does your cart have 3 rings? If so you would be ok with your plan. My Columbia carts (mid-80s) only have 2 rings. |

Re: New top end kit question
I have had columbia pistons with both 2 & 3 rings. I sense the later produced replacement pistons had 3 rings on both the HD and columbia engines. There is a shot of my destroyed 3 ring harley/columbia piston in my bump of vegascart shipment and more shots of my and another members destroyed 3 ring piston in my electric cooling fan thread.

Re: New top end kit question
If you remove the ring locating pin the ring will rotate and will hit one of the ports and mess up the piston and rings. The locating pins are there to keep the end of the rings from catching on the exhaust port and ruining the top end. If your getting too hot check the cooling fan and the ring gap on the new rings for the gap may not have enough clearance and be too tight.

Re: New top end kit question
I may be out of my tree on this one but what engine do you have in this cart? All of the harley/columbia carts that have the 2 cycle engines have a factory cooling fan.
