Which cable(s) to disconnect for winterizing?
Getting ready to shut down a Yamaha 2016 Drive 48 Volt Drive cart for the season. It will be stored outdoors in S. Jersey, and I read that disconnecting the battery will help maintain battery life. Please advise which cable(s) to disconnect - the main Positive, the main Negative, or both? Also watched a Youtube video showing a winterizing procedure of only disconnecting a cable linking the negative posts of 2 adjacent batteries. Would this accomplish the same effect as disconnecting a main cable? Thank you in advance!

Remove the main negative ( you could disconnect the linkage of 2 batteries anywhere in the pack also ). Charge the batteries at least once a month, due to self discharge of ~ 1% per day.

If it's stored outdoors, you must make sure to keep the batteries well charged! Charge them at least once a month. If they discharge too much, they can freeze and be damaged in cold weather.

Then you definitely do not want to charge in freezing conditions. |

ojo - thank you. A question, please - any thoughts as to why it seems disconnecting the main negative cable (which includes other connecting wires) is usually recommended, yet disconnecting a single cable connecting 2 of the 6 batteries (a lot easier) accomplishes the same thing?
V/A - thank you & will do! augie - thank you - not lithium |

If you are going to run a trickle charger, the batteries have to all be hooked together so you would want to disconnect either the main + or - connection only.

V_A - no trickle charger - just the "regular" charger. The cart is at a remote location, so when fully charged, will disconnect "the circuit" by removing a cable, until I'm back 4 weeks later.

OK but if you are gone for more than 4 weeks, you need to get someone to charge it for you or your batteries will discharge enough to damage them and they can freeze if it gets cold enough.
