I have been in the Golfcar business for 30 years.
I have a couple of OEM-used ones I use for testing.
My query was: How can ALL these suppliers of non-functional non-oem ignitors continue to sell them if they don't work 95% of the time?
I can get the Red Hawk eng-116 but OEMs are out of stock.
HEI doesn't work with that system and the MCI ignitor requires an MCI Pulser which won't work with the pre-MCI flywheel.
I was just trolling to see if anyone had found a cheaper alternative.
My customers complain and say "hell I can buy it online blah blah" and I get tired of arguing with them about how the cheap ones don't work.
Not sure how these sellers get away with this but they do. You are also correct about the HEI. They fire but won't open up with stock coil plus the one I did made work had a spark knock because of the timing issue using the HEI.

Used a snowmobile Denso coil and even drove the cart about 30 minutes but the coil soon melted and it quit and that was that . That's how I found out about the dreaded spark knock.

I actually got an MCI and Pre MCI engine mounted on a table at my shop. I test ignitors and like you do but much easier this way.

These are my test engines . One is a smoker , the other one is like new.

I also have extra OEM pre mci and mci ignitors but not going to sell them right now.
Hard making customers buy a part for $200 plus when they tell us they can get one for $30. Sort of like the china carbs.
I have give up trying and retired again

They get away with it because most of those stores make it difficult, if not impossible to return it when it doesn’t work. They can claim you damaged it, no returns on electrical parts, etc. And if you get it from Amazon, they will usually accept the return but they don’t really care.

I just looked at the invoice where I bought the last ignitor from a dealer for a person who wanted me to get him one.

Did you ever figure out where to get one ?
I also agree with you on dealing with people. I have ran into that with cheap china carburetors. I give up and tell them to take the cart to another shop.

I tried everything including an old ford module. No luck. . I made them all fire and the engine would run but when hot I heard the spark knock.
I got plenty of OEM ignitors so my days trying to find something that will work are over.
Let us know what you come up with

I have 3 or 4 used OEMs but don't know what to ask for them.

$ 200 would be a fair price for the OEM. I figure one that makes the engine fire and run would be just as good as a new one. When ezgo did have them in stock they were over $200 .
If you factor in inflation it might be higher than that.

I doubt you can convince people they are worth that much though being they tell us they can buy them all day for $30.
