Re: 1992 Yamaha G9 Too fast and smokin
They’re all pretty much the same really. Vegas carts makes everything you’d need to adapt it and bolt it into the cart.
Plus side, they’re strong and lot of fun. But for what you’ve described, wanting to go slow in campgrounds it may not be the best option for you. They’re significantly louder than a stock cart engine, and you’d never make beneficial use of the extra power at 5mph. They are a lot of fun for a toy/off road cart but if it’s something you drive regularly for getting place to place or around a farm or camp grounds and use it for transportation instead of just a toy, I’d personally take a stock engine over the 420 clone without hesitation. Personally I’d just rebuild the engine. Or call Don plowman / plowmans carts and send it to him. He stays very busy, but we’re getting near the end of “cart season” here in Michigan so I’d think his schedule for those kind of jobs would ease up before too long. And if you were looking for 420cc type performance, Don is the man that can make your stock engine perform like it’s twice the engine it really is, but not make a lot of noise doing it. |

Re: 1992 Yamaha G9 Too fast and smokin
Appreciate all the tips.
Deeper dive I see that the "kit" on ebay does not use OEM gaskets. Plan to make this my winter rebuild project. Is there a good rebuild resource available? Found a few youtube videos, but they don't seem al that great. |

Did you check compression cold and warm? Just curious...

Re: 1992 Yamaha G9 Too fast and smokin
Usually on the G9 they will smoke long before they lose compression. Especially if the motor was not maintained wonderfully. The oil control rings stick and it smokes but you can still have 165-170psi compression.
Paulzy123: you can “rent” a compression tester from most auto parts stores for free. They charge 60 bucks or whatever when you take it. And give your money back when you return it. |

Re: 1992 Yamaha G9 Too fast and smokin
Glad you mentioned the oil ring issue... I have 155psi cold compression verified 3 times. But I get some smoke (although I am waiting on carb parts to fix the super rich condition showing as a soot black plug) and it seems to be bluish as oil would be instead of dark/black like a rich issue
