Overheating motor controller
The vehicle in this discussion is a Heartland 2001 48 volt electric Vehicle.
My buddy got it for free installed new batteries in the cart, drove it around for about 45 minutes just doing 5 MPH around our private camping club. The motor controller was putting of some serious heat, and eventually the cart died, once the motor controller cooled off it would drive for bit and so on. Unable to determine the motor controller type, I looked at the motor and it has 4 wires going to it, so i think it is a DC motor? has anyone seen a motor controller heat up like this? what are your thoughts. Re: Overheating motor controller
The very first thing I would suggest is checking to make sure your connections are clean and tight. Also, check the cables to ensure they in good condition and not brittle, corroded internally or otherwise compromised.

Re: Overheating motor controller
All connections are good along with cables, and I believe all cables are 2 gauge, wires seemed a little warm, but not as hot as the controller.

Re: Overheating motor controller
Update: we found a loose lug on the reversing contactor which may be causing the overheat condition. Since we don't know the make or model of this cart, we plan on going with a standard SW202 reversing contactor. The existing one looks a little different but hopefully operates the same.
