Re: Need help understanding a tapered shaft adapter
After seeing the photos:
1. No keyway 2. Clean all parts with solvent/brake cleaner 3. Use rubber gloves to handle parts 4. Install parts as you show in photos 5. Tighten down your bolt That slot in the adapter is for "squish" when you tighten. The friction fit will tighten around the crankshaft and clutch will seat with the taper. As you tighten, the clutch will move further up the adapter adding more pressure/friction between the adapter and crankshaft. Just make sure the slot on the adapter is not aligned with the slot on the crank. I could be wrong. |

And you know....you don't have to use photobucket anymore, you can post the photos directly to this site.

Re: Need help understanding a tapered shaft adapter
I'm an "Old Guy" (76). I'm not up to date on all this computer stuff. How do I post photos directly to this site. I did try "Copy & Pasting" the photos but it didn't work.

Okay...installed exactly as you instructed. The tapered adapter does appear to be super tight on the engine shaft. I do not have a belt yet (because I don't know what size I need) but it certainly does not slip turning the clutch by hand and I even started the engine and revved it several times and it never appeared to slip. It also closed up and opened up as it should. I was surprised that the split in the adapted did not close up all the way but it did squeeze up a little as I tightened up the bolt. I did do the final tightening with an impact wrench so I am satisfied that it is good and tight. Now, for the next question...I need to relocate the engine to get the primary and secondary clutches aligned correctly. I assume that I should align the inner plates...am I correct? But, I'm not sure which side of the inner plates should be aligned. The primary clutch inner plate is much thicker than the secondary inner plate. (Photos attached). Also, any recommendations on where to order a belt? PS: Thanks for the instructions on how to attach photos. |

Re: Need help understanding a tapered shaft adapter
On all of my builds I've always just lined them straight up. I take length of 1" square tubing and lay it in the clutches, take a few measurements, tighten it down. I prefer the engine mount/carriage to be adjustable side to side and front to back. Never had a problem with belt wear or engagement.
