Found a Vanguard! Should I buy it? Hurry plz!
Found a 16 HP Vanny. Guy wants $140 and said the crank bearing is bad and the engine jumped timing. I have never worked on a vanguard so don't know what I'm in for. I know jumping timing on certain motors can be pretty catastrophic though. Should I get it or pass?

Sounds like a money pit to me. I never buy engines that need rebuilt, unless they are almost free.
It could be rebuilt, but you could be looking at a new crank, possibly valves and pistons if they made contact. For $300-$400 you should be able to find a good running used one. I doubt you could rebuild one with a new crank and pistons for that. |

No, it was an hour and a half away. That was the closest I've come to finding one of these damned things!

Oh it can be done....he just needs to know what's ahead of him if he decides to walk the plank. He could get lucky and all it needs is some gaskets and a cam. Or, it could all be junk. The heads alone might pay for the engine, but to me it probably isn't worth the risk. If the seller isn't willing to disassemble and fix it...maybe it's not fixable.

That's kind of what I was thinking....I have no problem tearing the whole thing apart and ordering what I need (within reason). But I dont want to buy something for $200 that is a complete waste.
