I was able to answer my own question. The points referenced in the link are the right ones.

This cart is back at the camp and running great (knocking on wood).

could you tell me what has to be done to replace the fan? Do I have to just remove the cast shoud around the fan

Sorry! I am just seeing this now. There are a bunch of things that have to happen to get the fan. It's actually possible to get to the fan with the motor in the cart. You'll have remove all of the engine mounting bolts and life the front of the motor to get to the front shroud.

Under the cover, you will find the oil injection apparatus that has to be removed. Most people delete these as they weren't reliable. After that, you have to remove the electronic ignition module or points. The fan should be accessible at that point.
