all four valves are right at .004"

i have had this motor for about 2 years but just in the past couple of months i have actually had the chance to start cranking it and test the engine setup

How much throttle do you have to give it for that cylinder to fire and warm up? If it runs good with just a tiny bit of throttle, it sounds like the pilot jet hole, in front of the throttle butterfly, for that cylinder is plugged. Can you post a pic of the top of the carb?

its intermittent all the way through the throttle, i can put my hand in fronf of the exhaust and can feel it cool off and get warm again. i'm not sure it ever does get warm.

i dont have a quick way to get a pic of my motor but here is one that looks identical to mine.

Can you get the model number off the tag on the fan shroud? I can look it up.
It should be something like 38xxxx-xxxx-xx
Also, if you remove the plug wire from the spark plug on the bad side, and install another plug in the wire to check for spark, does the plug have consistant spark throughout the entire throttle range.

If the spark is consistant, it is likely a fuel delivery issue to that side of the motor. The main jets are removeable on that carb. Make sure you can spray into the hole in the jet, and see fuel coming out of another hole in the carb venturi, You can do the same with the pilot circuits.

ok i swung through autozone and picked up a spark tester (el cheapo but it seems to work) and just test both sides, they both seem to be firing consistently. i watched for a good 5-7 minutes per side and never noticed a missed spark. it HAS to be the carb. i am gonna pull it off again and go through it with a fine tooth comb (literally).

thanks for all the help!

Good deal. Get a can of carb cleaner and use the small plastic hose that comes with it. Spray into the main jet on each side, and see where it comes out at. It should be the same for both sides. Do the same with the low-side(pilot) circuits.

i'm either blind dumb or both, i dont see an air/fuel mix screw anywhere on this carb! what am i missing? every carb i have ever worked on has at least two mix screws

The screw should be under these plugs. Since you don't have access to them, they shouldn't need to be adjusted. I would look somewhere else.
BTW, my 2-barrel carb has no adjustment except for the needle I installed.
