Default Ignition problem, intermittent spark

The unit is a '03 gas club car with the Kawasaki 290 engine, it runs fine sometimes (mostly when it is cold), but then it will run like you are using a toggle switch to control the speed, if I hold the pedal down it takes off hard for about 2 seconds then falls dead for about 2 seconds and comes back, repeat. I put my spark tester on it and watched the spark come and go when it started to act up. I don't really understand the electrical system on these, it is completely different than modern atv' and utilities such as a Rhino or Ranger, I do understand that the starter/generator starts it then turns over to a generator but that's about it. What "kills" the engine? What is the box mounted to the right of the oil filter that has a black and a brown ground wire ?
