Default Vanguard 23 Carburators

I know there are alot of people using the 2 barrel carb for these engines. And I've heard that with some mods and tuning they can run pretty good. I am just wondering why there aren't more people using motorcycle carbs on these engines.

I have lots of experience tuning Mikuni and Keihin type slide carbs, and they can run perfectly when done the right way. You can get them to idle really low too without any lag in acceleration.

Back in 2013 I experimented with a Chinese Keihin knockoff that I got pretty cheap on Ebay. It ran really good out of the box. I did the usual tuning with micro drill bits. But, after revisiting my thread, I remembered the real issue was that there was not room for an air filter for that carb on the VC440.

I still have the carb. I am thinking of using it on the Vanguard 23. I thought it was a 28mm, but it looks like I was wrong and it's a 24mm.

My question..... What is the Vanguard 2 barrel measurements in mm?

If I use the 24mm slide carb, would I be restricting air flow?

I'm thinking that carb will be too small for your motor. I'd still put it on there for experimenting. You already have it so nothing really invested. I do like the idea of using a slide carb. So easy to dial in.

I found that Backwater Performance has a single carb kit for the 23 Vanguard. The kit is $723, comes with the 34mm VM Mikuni carb, rev limiter, intake manifold, and all the associated parts.

They also have just the manifold for sale for $310.

That was the only manifold adapter I could find and those are big $'s And you would still need a spigot type manifold off that to run the mikunis. I am surprised someone hasn't whittle one up.Performance 670 makes one for the 22 HP predator for like $60. I wonder if that could be adapted to the vanguard.

Ended up with a Mikuni 42mm carb from a Yamaha Grizzly 660 atv. The carb manifold adapter is from Performance 670 and is a direct fit for the 2bbl Vanguard carb manifold.

pilot jet = stock
mid jet = one size up (wasn't marked, came in the kit)
main jet = 175 (stock was 140)
needle = lowest setting

The result? Starts without choke/enrichment. Idles at 900 rpm and very smoothly. Revs past 5000 rpm. There is still a bit of a stumble just above idle, I'm guessing the needle needs moved up or the mid jet needs to be larger. Power off idle is FANTASTIC! It will peel grass and throw gravel instantly. WAY better than expected. The upper rpm power is also FANTASTIC! I can feel the full shift of the clutch come in at about 3500 or so maybe, then the engine just takes off! It feels like it would rev forever, never really runs flat, just keeps accelerating. I did accidentally rev it past 5000 rpm one time, it just revs out so quickly. So I did a few 200 yard runs and it just has tons of power. Just gotta get that mid range stumble fixed and it'll be good to go.

I have heard people tell me that this carb was way too large. My thinking was that the Yamaha 660cc engine is similar in displacement to this engine so it has to be close. I'm very pleased with how it worked out, especially the idle. Even my 12 year old son commented on how nice it sounds at idle. It starts up instantly, even cold. Very pleased with how easy it was to jet and set the idle air setting. So much adjust-ability. It took a few hours to tune it, but once I changed jets it was easy to tell which direction I needed to go. Just took some patience.
