Default Rev limited advice.

Hey all. Thanks for everyones posts and replies. Just a great resource for us first time gassers. I picked up an abandoned 89 CarryAll I with a spent flat head. Long story short, I plucked a ccw fe290 and all the goodies to go with it out of a 96. It was fresh to begin with but he was setting up a 600 for it. I'm done with the swap. Looks great and prrrrs like a kitty. Set my throttle up direct bypassing the governer arm. Obviously that puts me at risk so I'm thinking a single cylinder adjustable / programable rev limiter will set me up for a few more mph. The original is still on the front of the motor but from what I have read there are a few more rpm to be had before you start gritting your teeth. Looking for a reccomendation.

Get a tachometer, set the redline to 4000 rpm and you should be safe at least in short sprints.Go beyond that 4000rpm limit consistently and you are liable to grenade your engine. I've checked adjustable rpm limiters and have yet to find one that applies to a single cylinder engine application although I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

Thanks Chris. That was one of my first thoughts. My only fear is my wife jumping on it and paying more attention to her phone than the tach. The curb rash on each of the wheels on her car will back me up on that. Thanks for the number as well.

Thanks guys. I did some digging and found a single cylinder tack / hourmeter at West Marine. Small, black and digital. Less than 50 bucks. But come to think of it I don't believe it is backlit... I'll keep looking. I have reservation mounting up a round analog. I could see it if I was sitting on a big block. Otherwise it's like popriviting a hoodscoop on an Escort....

ha. i explained to my teenage son and wife till i was blue in the face about over reving. long story short son had friend over....one was chasing the other on a four wheeler around on my cart. the result: backfired so much that it burned a groove in the exaust valve between the head and the cylinder. motor is completely non-rebuildable. motor is trash. boy and his friend thought it was funny that it blew up. later they were being stupid on his four wheeler and burned it up. he didn't think that was funny.

no tach yet. i have an even more fool proof rev. limiter. a log chain. i wanted to chain the kid and his friend to a tree, but wife wouldn't let me. so i chained cart when i'm not using it. i have another idea i'm working on : high capacity static discourager. it's based on my dogs training collar with prox. detectors. the way it would work is like this: to close to my cart and the prox switch activates the collar worn by teen. teen eventually learns to avoid cart.

You would make a fortune if you could sell those to myopic Buick drivers.

Chris.
