Default Need Help adjusting speed on 2009 EZGO with 400 Kawasaki

I have a 2009 EZGO Sport 2+2 with the 400cc 13 hp Kawasaki engine. It has been gradually losing speed. It originally ran @ 15mph but it is now only at 10mph. Is it possible that the throttle cable or governor is vibrating and losing adjustment?

I have seen some threads that discuss an adjustment to the throttle cable or governor that will optimize speed but most of these threads seem to focus on older version engines.

Could someone familiar with the newer model and engine please describe the linkage location and adjustment that is required to bring the speed back to 15mph. If you could provide a picture of the linkage it would be very helpful. I found some pics of this adjustment point in the tech section, but unfortunately it was for an older model and different engine.

I am a long way from a service dealer and I feel that I can safely and responsibly make the adjustment. Please Help.

Welcome to BGW! I'm sure someone here will be familiar with your setup. If not, get us a pic of the governor and we can figure it out. Most of the governors I've messed with on Ezgo's were the older style and you simply just put a spacer or something in the spring area to keep it from compressing.

Hey guys, I figured it out. At the back of the engine there is a throttle cable that connects to a spring that connects to the engine linkage. On the cable side of the assembly is a cable adjuster that passes through a bracket and is captured by two nuts, one on each side of the bracket. There was about 1/2 inch of additional adjustment available to increase or decrease tension.

I noticed that there was a lot of slack in the spring when the throttle was at rest and that the spring was only under slight tension when the throttle was fully floored. I adjusted the cable tension about 1/4 inch to decrease slack.

Before this adjustment the cart was running 15 mph. Now it is running 19.5 mph. Still in factory specs but noticeably quicker and better power. I could adjust for more speed I am sure but I am not interested in that. I want a safe and legal cart.

Thanks, renotse
