Default Motor oil in the rear axel?

Can I use synthetic 5w30 motor oil in my rear axel housing? I only ask because I have some laying around that I could use up.

30 weight or higher is recommended, the heavier the lube, the quieter the gears, i often use lucas 85w-140 gear oil just so its extremely quiet and it doesn't lead to gear problems. Almost every time i have had to change rear gears in a cart the customer has used motor oil...

I do have some 80-90 gear oil, but I didnt think you could use it in these rear ends. Would it be OK to use it in my axel?

If so, how much should I use in this type of differential?

I use it frequently and have never had problems, that appears to be a club car rear end which takes 22 oz (.67 liter) recommended by manufactor SAE30 WT. API Class SE, SF, or SG oil (or higher)...hope that helps!

Well, I opened the diff this evening, and not suprising, there was no fluid in it. I ran 10oz of fluid through it to flush out anything that may have been in there, but nothing cam out except fresh fluid. So I plugged it up and added the 22oz of 80-90 gear oil. Runs a little quieter, but it still sounds like George Jetsons car.

I changed the gear oil in mine out to Amsoil syn. Mine was whining and roaring a bit. After the Amsoil, nothing, quite as a mouse.
