Specific Gravity and State of Charge
Looking at the Chart and comparing my batteries to it, I find that although my specific gravity is 1.28, my volt meter reads only 6.25 volts. If I compare the volts to the chart I find that my battery is only 80% charged. If the specific gravity is at the maximum how can my battery only be 80%.
Thanks |

Re: Specific Gravity and State of Charge
When you read specific gravity it needs to taken per cell. Each cell is its own two volt battery. While one cell can read 1.28 the other two may read lower giving the total of 6.25V. You may also want to rinse the hydrometer between cells to prevent a false reading.
There are some more knowledgable on this somewhere around here. This bumps you to the top of the list. Maybe we'll get some more comments... |

Re: Specific Gravity and State of Charge
The Batteries are T105's and 6 years old. I hve removed them from the cart and am using them in my Motor Home as house batteries. They are used to start the Onan Genset and power the lights and Refrig when not connected to outside power or the genset running. I have two connected as 12v.
I do check each cell but I have not rinsed the Hydrometer between tests. |

I directed some of my questions about batteries to the trojan site. They are very good and more accurate than I can possibly be. They would know the cause for the difference in readings. They may ask if you checked your VOM batteries?? Wish I could help you more... |
