Yamaha Cart Struggles for speed!
I have been working on my G1 for a while now and have installed an 8hp Briggs in it. I just finished installing a G2 rear end in it. I finished it up and have ridden it a bit and it all worked fine. I even had it up to about 30 mph. Yesterday I was going to take it for a ride and top speed is way down. The engine winds pretty tight but the cart won't reach speed.
With it in neutral the clutches are working properly and the belt goes all the way to the top. So don't think it's a clutch problem. It feels like the brakes are locked, but they aren't. The governor parts on the outside of the differential were all gone except the shaft. So I just cut it off. I have no idea how the governor in the rear works, but could it be causing the problem? Any ideas, I'm kinda stumped here. Last edited by smokindawg; 12-09-2014 at 12:31 AM.. Reason: Change Title |

Re: Yamaha Cart Struggles for speed!
If it at one time ran 30mph, then I'd say something is worn or broken. The governor on the rear works off of wheel speed and will pull on the throttle cable, but if you don't have the throttle hooked up to it, then it does nothing.

Re: Yamaha Cart Struggles for speed!
Thanks for that Slo, but I found the problem. And my answer may help others somewhere down the line.
I installed the G2 rear end but it didn't come with a driven clutch, so I used my G1 clutch. I think there is a difference with the shaft between the G1 and G2 rear. The points on the sheave and the drive part overlap. They barely contact when the clutch is all the way closed and the belt is at the top of the sheaves. This allowed the reverse pads on the sheave side to catch and cause obstruction problems when the clutch tried to engage. I removed the reverse pads and it seems to be working good again now. I even rode it up thru the woods running over small trees and it never had any problems. So, while it's not made for it, the clutch so far is working, but we'll see for how long. I did notice that when I installed the G1 clutch on the G2 rear end, that I had to add a few extra washers to that the nut was far enough out to install a cotter pin and have it catch the grooves in the nut. I may need to just spring for a G2 clutch before it's over. Time will tell. |
