A look inside Nissan Leaf lithium battery pack

Here's a complete Nissan Leaf lithium battery pack after being removed and another with the cover off. There are 48 batteries in there. Each is 8.4v fully charged. I didn't need the whole battery pack but it was cost effective to buy the whole pack instead of individual batteries. I am converting my Yamaha and a neighbors ezgo.

How big is that thing?
It would be cool but unnessarry to use the whole pack in one golf gart some how.

Each 8.4v battery is just under 9 pounds so all 48 are 432 pounds.

A stock 36v cart can get by with just 5 batteries and have near stock range. I intend on using 14 in my Yamaha for maximum Alltrax voltage and extreme range. With exception of mounting them, the only requirement is a special lithium charger. I use QC chargers, they are between $260-350 depending on voltage, mount on-board and are available in a lithium charge profile.

Here is a picture of 14 batteries in an ezgo txt I built to keep but I ended up selling it.

The 14 battery ezgo txt read 58.8v fully charged. The lithium charger goes into constant voltage mode at that peak voltage (58.8v) as I spec'd out with QC (on-board charger) and it shuts off when current drops to less then 1 amp.

The Alltrax controllers can accept up to 60v so this is about the limit.

The 14 battery pack (120Ah) weighs ~120 lbs compared to a pack of 6 T-875's (378 lbs) or 8 T-105's (496 lbs). I also have much less voltage sag with these lithiums then with FLA so performance is many times improved from weight loss and higher steady battery voltage.

The ezgo txt above had a long travel suspension, 25" tires and managed 42 miles on a charge. I built it to keep but did end up selling to build me this 2010 yamaha drive. The yamaha is lighter stock then a txt. I will keep less then 20" tires on it and expect to break 50 mile range with a 14 battery pack.

Just a thought. You went 42 miles on only 29% of the Nissan Leaf battery back. If you used all 48 cells that works out to 144 miles on one charge!! Give or take for the added weight.

Where did you pick up your leaf battery pack. I'm assuming a large parts recycler or ebay?

This is pretty sweet! Nice work! Clean and much much lighter. What would you say the overall cost to do this to one cart would be same setup as you have?
