Yeah I think a proper clutch is the way to go too. Rather not use the taper adapter and I don't know if this particular Bombardier unit even works so getting a jackshaft tapered correctly on one end at a machine shop would be a crap $hoot. And like you said the operating RPM is likely pretty high. Could maybe deal with that using the jackshaft pulleys on the crankshaft side of the engine but it would be on it's way to being a Rube Goldberg configuration at that point.
