Raising voltage to 72 volts from 48 volts
2003 CC DS series. My batteries are getting to the end of thier lives. Ive had a 72v cart before and really enjoyed the speed and torque. I did not plan out some of my options very well. I want go do a better job this time.
I am leaning towards the Alltrax SR72XXX. I cant decide what amp to get. 400 or 500. Would cart pull 500 amps at 72v or will 400 amps be plenty? I have a HD FNR switch, 400 amp solenoid, and an Admiral A1 motor. I currently have a GE FSIP 700 amp controller. I want the adjustability of the SR 72XXX. So which is better, 400, 500, or 600 amp? |

Re: Raising voltage to 72 volts from 48 volts
The Alltrax SR72XXX controller is available in 300, 400 or 500 amp models. The 500 amp model includes a cooling fan while the 300 and 400 does not include a fan but it can be added for another $30 to $40. The price difference that I have seen online is only $70 more for each 100 amp increase from the 300 amp controller.
For an extra $140, it would be a good investment to step up to the SR72500 controller with the cooling fan. Looking at the operating specs below, do you need to have a 210 amp x 72 volt continuous rated controller ... likely not, you could drop down to the 150 amp continuous rated SR72400 for $70 less ... but it does not have the fan. I would believe that the SR72300 with 130 amp continuous rating might be a little small for your application. If your cart is still operating, you might want to do some metering to understand your actual amperage draws and size up to a 72 volt controller accordingly. Alltrax SR Specs.JPG |

Re: Raising voltage to 72 volts from 48 volts
More volts = less amp draw.
In other words if your 48 volt cart is running 20MPH @ 50 amps then a 72 volt cart running 20MPH is @ 40 amps give are take. The numbers are not true numbers but for reference. The higher the voltage the less amps it takes. Unless your going to be doing some crazy off roading are drag racing are some very large wheels a 300 amp controller would be more than enough for a nice cruiser in my opinion. |

Re: Raising voltage to 72 volts from 48 volts
I use it for deer hunting. Has lift and 23" tires. Terrain is not mountainous. Located SW Georgia, but has draws and valleys.
Appreciate the help. |

Re: Raising voltage to 72 volts from 48 volts
Navitas offers a 72v variation of their tsx controller it will perform both series and sepex functions. Mines a 600amp with Bluetooth connection for adjusting settings. Works great but I will say if you plan to set it and forget it the alltrax is probably the better buy I want to say the TSX 600/72 is around $680.
