Hi Ben,

I gave the link to Sergio’s thread above. It gives exact instructions on how to wire things up. Go through it and ask any questions after you’ve digested the thread.

Cheers
Pat.

I see why you pointed me there. Wow! That’s a lot of info to take in! I feel confident I can build the disconnect relay circuit Sergio designed thanks to the wiring schematics, but now I have yet another question. When/if I decide to upgrade to a 72v (20 pack) build, will the circuit still be compatible? Would I just need the 20s BMS and higher voltage charger at that point?

I appreciate you tolerating my ignorance. Electronics are far from what I’d say I’m good at.

Hi Ben,

Besides what you already mention, The circuit will remain the same but you will have to replace the 48v relays with 72v. Everything else should be ok, even the zener diode should be fine.

I’ve also found a reasonable, scaleable BMS if you haven’t already found one.

I would still go with a JBD BMS though.

Thanks Pat. I did see that one but I went ahead with the 14s anyway. No need to over complicate this any more than it is for my first build.

I was still a little undecided on 48 or 72 volts for a while but I think I’ve decided to just try the 48v setup first as it may be enough for me for right now. The batteries came in today and the BMS should be here in a couple weeks. I’m sure I’ll be reporting back once I start piecing everything together.

Thanks again for everything!

Ok, i have this thing mostly wired and built on the bench. I’m a bit embarrassed to ask this, but I can’t figure out which orientation the charger is supposed to be installed with Sergio’s relay circuit. I’m following a hand drawn diagram that Sergio posted (I’ll try to post a pic if i can figure it out) and there’s a part where it shows 120v input into K3 (which i assume is to be connected to the extension cord once install into cart is completed.)

I’m confused which side of the charger connects to the BMS and K2. Is it the input from 120v or the output (to the device it’s meant to charge)?

It’s a lot to post a pic. It’s at the end of the first post.

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,

The charger OUTPUT (48v nominal) goes to K2, definitely NOT the 120v input.

Charger output negative goes to C- (or P-, depends on how the BMS is labeled) and the charger output positive goes to N/O on K2.

Cheers
Pat.

Thanks for the quick reply.

So does the charger input go to the new charger plug then? Meaning I would connect two wires to that plug, ont to charger and one for the 120v input on K3?

Correct. The “charger plug” is now a 120v connection to the cart. It will power both the charger input and the coil on k3. Make sure the plug you use is rated for 120vac. You shouldn’t use the original 48vdc charging plug.

Cheers
