Mobil 1, Royal Purple, and AMS oil is the only true pure synthetics that I know of. Anything else is a mixture and does contain conventional oil. Just be careful if you are switching. I've never had this problem but it can or could occur. Synthetics are made up of smaller molecules and do contain cleaning agents. Thus, it could cause a leak in an older engine: cleaning the sludge from around seals or being able to seep around them much easier since it is made up of smaller molecules. Just something to remember. I personally use Mobil 1 in almost all my vehicles. It is a good synthetic oil and can be purchased at Walmart.

Possibly because small engines run hotter and have a LOT more temperature variation than automobile engines?

I change mine every 2-3. But I never change it between October and March or April. During the summer when it gets hotter and ran harder I change it more often.

I change mine when it starts to look dirty (about every 3 mths). It only takes one quart so it's not a big deal to change it often: takes only about 5 min's also.
