Default 81 HD gas low power no speed

Just bought a 81 HD four wheeler($100.00),runs but lacks power. I have noticed it's throwing oil from aroud pulley that drives starter/gen. I'm guessing this could cause a loss of power. Am I correct ?

I would be sure you have the proper oil/gas fuel mixture first. Then if things are not right (compression should read 85 to 90 PSI and correct timing) I would suspect the crankcase seals.

I shall answer my own question. Yes, leaking seals can cause a lack of power.
Compession was about 65psi when it ran but leaked oil at clutch side seal.
Compression is now 30psi, wont run and clutch side seal is toast.

You might get by with a set of rings but the compression is just too low. Also replace both crank seals. Time it in forward and reverse and you should be running very good.

Thanks, for now I plan on just replacing the crank seals and the drive belt. Once I do the seals I will check the compression again, it might need rings but not today.
Trying to find parts locally is not easy in SE Arizona.

Don't forget the parts manual is on www.buggiesgonewild.com/columbia-parcars in the HD section. It might help finding parts, even in Arizona. If nothing else, you'll know how to put it back together!

Putting it back together is not a problem,I like puzzles.
I disassembled the engine in my '71 international pickup, five years later I put it back together without a manual, and yes it runs.

I had a friend that rebuilt his old v8 and had it almost all together when he found the coffee can full of mushroom cam followers.

Not real sure about extra parts, did need to find a radiator, transmission mount, and clutch linkage.
