Should I check motor ? series model
I am in the process of taking two carts and making one. One thing is getting rid of the beat up metal body which I have already removed. Installing the plastic .
The 1996 series is the one I will be doing. I have it running now using three 12 volt batteries just to make sure it ran after I got a used controller. It will be for a friend of mine who ( age 78 ) needs one to get around on as he has lots of health issues. My question is > This motor is where I can get to it easy now as I have the body off. Should I remove it and check the brushes out or just finish installing the body and cowl and let him have it ? I will also buy new batteries as soon as I get body and cowl back on. Maybe install state of charger meter |

Re: Should I check motor ? series model
If it were me I would take the opportunity to check them now. Once the body is on it can be a pain in the rear! We ain't flexible like those younger members lol

Re: Should I check motor ? series model
How much trouble is this motor to take apart ? to view if brushes are worn ? How heavy is this thing? I don't want to drop it on my foot

It's 3 7/16 bolts to take it off and it weighs about 35 pounds. I would recommend taking it off now and inspecting the bearing and brushes.

Yes you can see the brushes and they are cheap to replace

Re: Should I check motor ? series model
Thanks
I did find where roady89 way back in 2010 explained how to do this on post number 6. https://www.buggiesgonewild.com/showthread.php?t=40496 Its been cold in my shop but as soon as the weather warms a little I will check those brushes and report back. I got the body painted Toyota super white and it looks great I wanted to do this while that motor is so easy to get to. Hope its not stuck. Old beat up metal body is gone and a the plastic one is ready to rivet on. |

Re: Should I check motor ? series model
No, you can't see them without splitting the motor after it's out. If the motor runs well, and there is good conductivity between A1 and A2 (the brushes), I'd leave it alone. I don't like fixing what ain't broke, especially when it can open a can of worms. But if you are confident in your DIY skills, and it'll help you sleep better, go ahead and do it now while it's easy.

Re: Should I check motor ? series model
That's just dumb. If it were me and I had the body off, first thing I would be doing is checking the motor brushes and commutator along with any bearings. Last thing you want on a 1996 cart is to put the body back on and a few weeks down the line, trying to pull the motor cos the brushes are worn. Better to learn how now, than later. Come on Trig, I know you can do it!
