Default Bypassing OBC

The OBC in my 2000 Club Car DS is failing. The relay in the charger activates and stays that way but the charge current cycles on and off at when at high charge currents. I have reset the OBC twice with no change in the symptoms. If I bypass the OBC with a wire from the fuse at the charger connector to the battery, the current cycling stops and I get normal charging. Once the current gets low, I can remove the bypass and the charging stays normal. I suspect that the SCR in the OBC is opening from heat stress. If I permanently bypass the OBC, will the OBC shut off the charging when the battery voltage reaches full charge? Will the bypass overstress the batteries?
