86 Marathon input shaft?
Opted for motor upgrade but cant get input shaft off. I've searched here and tried many tricks... And noticed my input shaft does not look like anything here or online. Mine has a nut on it.
I can't find any reference to it anywhere therefore can't look up how to's nor fine part numbers for replacement. Does anyone know which input shaft I'm talking about / and could give me advice to remove or replace it? |

Re: 86 Marathon input shaft?
Apparently, you have a split case differential that EZGO used from 1986.5 through 1987.
Attached are the Parts and the service manuals for it. Looks like the threaded shaft is actually the armature shaft in both manuals, but if it is only mechanically coupled to the armature shaft, heat might loosen it. Doesn't look like you could hurt the armature at this point. BTW: Motor removal and disassembly instructions in service manual. |

Re: 86 Marathon input shaft?
It seems like the armature and input shaft are one piece, the breakdown doesn't show that it can be removed / or that it is a seperate part....
This is an issue... How would I go about adding a aftermarket motor? Adapters? |

Re: 86 Marathon input shaft?
Short of installing a 1988 or newer Marathon rear axle with a one piece differential case so a spline type motor can be used, or getting the same motor, my only suggestion would be contact somebody that builds motors.
I don't know if PQ (https://plumquick.com/) does anything like it, but EMP (https://empinc.biz/) might. |

Re: 86 Marathon input shaft?
If memory serves (???), EZGO and Dana were in a bit of a tussle in the mid 80's hence the different rear ends for model years 86-87 on the X cars.
Your shaft "looks" like it came with a helical cut gear that slides over the input shaft and is secured by key and then a nut/washer on the end. Somewhere I have a motor from an 86.5 X444 car where the input shaft resembles your photo. IIRC it is a GE motor. Not a lot of motor options for that particular rear end if that is indeed what it is. Sorry not a lot of help.... Good luck! |
