Loose Steering In 1998 Series TXT w/ Frame Mounted Steering
I have a 1998 electric Series TXT with frame mounted steering. The steering is very loose, and has excessive "slop" in the big-*** bolt in the middle of the first photo. It's part 15 - the bushing - on page 115 of 28646.pdf. I also have a ruptured boot, which means crud may have gotten into the rack and pinion part, though it feels tight and smooth. It appears that the only problem is the bushing, but if anyone has experience with working on these, what parts should I just go ahead and replace, since I don't want to pull this thing apart more than once, and I also don't want to have it apart waiting for parts to arrive.
An impossible question, I know, but if there's a general consensus that you replace X when you service Y, that would be nice to know. thanks Adam |

Re: Loose Steering In 1998 Series TXT w/ Frame Mounted Steering
I did what I hoped to avoid, which is tearing it apart twice.
On 11/2/2009 I purchased and replaced the following from shopezgo.com: Rack - 70718G01 Pinion - 70717G01P Bellows - 70183G01 Steering column gasket - 70223G01 Flanged bearing - 70185G01 Steering thrust washer - 70216G01 That helped a lot, but my cart free-wheels downhill, so I can easily get going 25+ mph. Steering was still a little looser than I liked, so on 3/8/2010 I replaced the: Rack ball end - 70192G01 Steering housing service kit - 75364G01 That made it good as new. The housing service kit, if I recall, had several internal sleeve bearings/bushings that weren't available as replacement parts, but had two parts I had previously bought. In fact, most of the parts I wanted weren't on their website, so I emailed them the part numbers from the service manual, which they added to their website. Good luck, and let us know how it went. |

wow man awesome information. I figured the housing might be bad. Where did you get the service manual?
I rebuilt everything but the housing and the pinion. I will try to place my order tomorrow. manwitaplan |

I can't even remember what I ate for breakfast, much less what I did in 2009.
Sorry. Try the service manual? |
