Unhappy G16 stops running

Hey guys,
My 96 G16 is having issues that I think are fuel line or carb problems. It runs ok then starts sputtering and then won't run. After sitting for awhile (20 minutes or so) it will start again but before long will sputter to the point that it won't run.

I drained and replaced the old gas.

I've taken the bowl off the carb, used carb cleaner on the bowl & float. Removed and cleaned the main jet. Removed and cleaned the fuel pump. But can't seem to shake the running rough. Oh yeah, when I remove the bowl (done it twice now) it is full of gas so I know it is getting gas.

Suggestions?
Thanks!

There is a situation where when they get warm, the ignition (TCI) gets hot and stops working. About the only way to find that is to carry a spark plug around with you and when it stops running, pull the spark plug wire off the plug and attach it to the extra plug, hold the extra plug to ground (muffler/something metal on motor) and wind it over to see if you have spark. If not, its a good chance that TCI is bad.

Before you spend the $140. to replace it tho. check wire connections on the whole car etc.

It would help you to read this site awhile, alot can be learned here about your car and maint.

Mine had the same symptoms when I first got it, And yep, TCI was bad!

Good luck, Mike

Another thing I have found latley. The gas we get now (with ethonal, or what ever that stuff is) seems to attracted moisture. I've been cleaning out pulsar lines and cleaning carbs like crazy lately You have 3 lines at the fuel pump (1- from tank/1-to carb and 1 to the engine IE: pulsar line), take the pulsar line off at he fuel pump, take off the oil filler plug (stick a rag over it), now "blow into the pulsar hose (towards the engine), you should feel no restriction. If you do, put some carb cleaner in the hose and use compressed air to get all the cuagulated mess into the engine block. Then change oil (at this point I'm recommending pure synthetic, it doesn't seem to cuagulate with moister as mutch). And finally, add some sort of fuel additive, like "Heat"/"Stabile" ect as I understand it, it combats the Ethonal properties. Hope that helped. Good luck

Thanks a bunch Mike. Yeah, I've been reading everything I can on similar conditions. I really appreciate the advice. I got this cart and customized to try and learn more about small engines. Well, I guess I'm getting my education. An extra spark plug would be pretty cheap. I can try that next. I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks SmallBlock. I'll look into that as well. I really appreciate the tips. Got a few things to look into.

Now that Block is watching over my shoulder, i should tell you to get a "dynamic spark tester" instead. You run the chance to ruin the TCI with (grounding the extra plug). Use the spark tester between the spark wire and the plug in the engine. You will be able to see if there is spark with the tester! Safer way to go! I got mine at Harbor F. about $5.

And we like pictures!!

What makes you think I'm looking over your shoulder? And yes I like the "dynamic spark tester", although not as critical on G16 and up ignition system as G14 and down's.

I'll look into one of those spark testers. Any chance a dirty plug could cause these symptoms? I pulled the spark plug to get the part number. I figured if I'm getting another one that I might as well get one that fits my cart. My plug was black and had some build up on it. I cleaned it and put it back in. Bought a new one for the test. Drove around for about 30 minutes and couldn't make if fail! Just wondering if I was lucky or if a dirty plug could cause it. Didn't think to look at that since it was a new plug installed 9 months ago.

Along those lines. The plug in my cart is a BR4ES. The owners manual calls for a BPR2ES. According to online parts, both will fit. Any big difference in the two?
