Default Life of a fuel filter

How often do you guys replace your fuel filters, if at all?

Do they become less efficient and restrictive as they get older? Only reason I ask is because when I fist got the cart, the tank was full of gelled gas/oil. Even after numerous cleaning cycles, the filter got clogged easily and a noticeable performance decrease was noticed. I have since changed it, but does it make that big of a difference?

Thanks
