It could be done. I experimented with a gokart a few years ago that I built out of my junk pile. I used a 1.5 hp 90volt permanent magnet motor for the drive motor, and a 6.5 hp gas engine connected to a modified gm alternator.

It worked ok but was not very efficient.

I was hoping to use a generator in the 13 hp range and transform the ac to 36-48 vdc and use the carts existing electrical system. As I stated earlier I am not an electrical wizzard.PS I don't even own an electric cart but just wondered if it could be done.

Nice find.I looked up 13 hp genrator and it's powered by a honda 390 gx.That produces 8750 watts peak,7000 continous. It cost $1000.Now if actually fit in a golf cart and we convert the ac power to 36-48 vdc we have our super hybrid.PS love the mowing deck but it probably makes changing a few jackshafts and belts cheap. It also makes you wonder with all that juice what else we could run.

OK, just suppose a generator could make enough amps to kick a cart from dead still, you would still have to listen to the generator screaming at full bore all the time.

No we hook the generator to the throttle so it only revs when there is demand.Just for laughs I see the h.f. generator with the 420 cc engine on sale for $569.Rated #1 for 2 years in a row by c.r.

I think you might be better off running that generator to charge batteries, like one of the smaller lighter lithium packs from the Nissan Leaf. That way the generator might not even have to run at all times, more like a Prius set-up.
