Default Question on starting 1969 HD golf cart.

Hello, I have been working on my new (to me) Harley Davidson gas golf cart.
I have change starter, all wiring, micro switch and finally the forward/reverse switch. But I am starting to think that either I am doing something wrong when starting. If I turn the ignition key to on and put forward/reverse in the center position all I get is a click. If I move the lever to forward or reverse then the starter turns over. Is that correct or is something wrong. The reason I questions is because while the starter is turning the wheels are turning as well which if the tires were actually touching the ground I am thinking that the cart would move.

Could someone please guide me.

Thank you

What you are doing sounds completely normal. When the F/R is in the center you are activating the solenoid but not the F or R circuits given that your F/R level is essentially in neutral.

Your starter moving in F/R means that things are perfect with that part of it. The turning starter absolutely will move a cart forward or reverse, albeit very slowly and not for very long as the battery will peter out.

It sounds like you are in good shape.

The cart's belt will slip rather than the cart move unless the there are enough rpms to engage the primary clutch. I will admit we used to deliberately hit the key with the throttle down to briefly spin the tires even on pavement.
