Default Subaru EFI backfiring

Hello, I’ve got a 2016 Precedent with the Subaru efi engine. I’m having a problem with it backfiring. Normally it pops after coasting to a stop and then it backfires loudly as soon as I press the gas pedal. I did a lot of reading on this issue and only found information on carbureted engines. I completely understand why and how a carb engine will backfire but being fuel injected, I have no idea where to start. Any help will be appreciated.

A leaky injector could do exactly the same thing. Not sure how you would verify that is your situation but, it sure sounds like: unburned fuel in the engine as it spins down to a stop, then lighting off in the exhaust as the engine fires up again.

Well it seems you can’t just replace the injector. Best I’ve found is a ECM and new throttle body assembly for $1600. Ouch!

Have you modified the governor to make it go faster?
Usually backfiring is the result of the throttle plate not closing all the way. On the EFI engine this might still cause the injector to keep spraying, but if the pedal is up the coil will not spark.

Not too familiar with the details on how the EFI system on that engine really works, so just spit-balling here.

I haven’t adjusted the throttle or governor. The cart runs a top speed of 18.
