Default Riot kit Range

I have a 2017 Drive 2. 19in wheels, stock controller and motor. Was thinking of going with the plowman's riot kit. From what I've read I have the 6.7HP motor. So the kit would include a 9.5HP motor and 500A controller. I was wondering if people saw a significant range reduction. I use it to drive around the neighborhood and take the kids to the park and pool. Thanks!

I'll just say this, if you rip out your 350 engine, and install a 454, your gas mileage will go down. I'm pretty sure you can interpret that.

The faster you go the shorter the range. Motor rated HP is almost meaningless. As is the controller's max current rating.

Yeah I'm an engineer, so I understand how that works. I was looking for a quantitative value. Something a little more than your range will be worse. Maybe like you will go from 15 miles to 12 miles.

So I'm assuming it's like buying a radio and hoping you get the max output vs the RMS value?

So are controller maps more important then?

Controller maps are very important to get best efficiency or higher MPH - pick one. Maybe that is a bit rude but to get more max speed, you have to weaken the field to reduce the BEMF and get more motor current.

Interesting. So can you set the Back EMF in the controller or is that a physical property of the motor?

The BEMF is a function of the motor RPM and the field strength and how the armature is wound. Once the BEMF gets high enough, the controller can apply full battery voltage and the motor will not continue to generate enough torque to increase in RPM. To further increase RPM, the controller can reduce the field current which reduces the BEMF. That is basically what a field map does. The field map has to be matched to your particular motor characteristics. This only applies to a SEPEX motor! (not a series wound one) If you have an Alltrax controller, you can data log a max throttle run and see how the field current is reduced at higher speeds.

Wow, thanks for the technical information. Yeah that was the plan to get an alltrax controller. I have an AC cart so waiting on that to get released. They are supposed to be coming out soon.
