Default comet 780 adjustments

i came across a comet 780 for mu 16hp briggs... it is wider then the stock clutch,, i searched for hours last night and couldnt find much,, so iam asking you fellers...i found a post that tom said these clutches can be adjusted for a1 3/16 or 1" belt by moving a snap ring,,, ive looked at the salsbury manual in the stickie,,, it doent show any adjustments.. can anyone tell me how to put this clutch to 1" belt.......

if by some reason it cant be adjusted.. the drive clutch would need a 1 3/16 belt to engage it but the driven clutch is still set up for the 1" belt,,, that wont work will it??? please...

There are factory spacers made to change the belt width in the driven, good luck on finding some..but you might get lucky and just have to tear it down and remove some. I think I have the instructions, I'll look. I'd rather have the wider belt and have the driven machined for that belt, or buy a new one from Tom.

Well, I don't have it for the 780. The minimum belt size for the smaller 94C is 1 3/16 and I would assume the same for the 780. So you can go bigger with shims, just can't go smaller.

Take the 3 bolts out
take the lock ring and washers off
remove snap ring and thin washer under it
remove clutch cover
set clutch in press fully supported under clutch
push spider down 3/16" with press
you will see new snap ring groove
reassemble
